Tomorrow a group blog of which I was a member from September 2010 to January 2014 will relaunch with a whole new group of Austen-inspired authors. Sharon Lathan and I will act as administrators for Austen Authors, which will rise from the ashes as did the fabled Phoenix.

This weekend, one can find the “Launch” giveaway details, as well as the winners from our pre-Launch activities. The real, “get-down-to-business” posts begin on Monday, January 26. So, if you are a reader who needs more Austen in your life, please check us out.

Among our happy crew, we have those who write sequels, retellings, variations, and contemporary stories. Some set their stories in Regency England, while others explore the same concepts, but in a modern world. There are those who write women’s fiction and those who write for young adults. Most also pen stories beyond the Austen…

Carpe Diem for Writers

0

On one of my antiquing trips I came across a little wooden plaque engraved with what I thought were the words Carpe Diem. Reminded of the movie Dead Poets Society, in which the phrase carpe diem played a role, as well as one of my favorite actors Robin Williams who starred in the movie, I picked up the plaque. Upon closer inspection I saw the words were not carpe diem, but Carpe Diet.

What a clever play on the phrase, I thought, and good advice as well, especially since I have a need to seize my own diet. I put the plaque down, but continued to think about the word carpe and its importance in our lives. The idea of seizing something has a hopeful element to it. When we seize a day or a moment or a job the chances of doing something special or having something…

On the 1st day of Christmas…Fudge and Author Meda White!

0

My true love gave to me…dessert!

Memories of the holidays always seem to center around my Gramma’s house, more specifically, Gramma’s food.  She would put out a spread and we’d eat for hours.  Years later, my mother continued this tradition and now that I have a house and kids of my own, it seems only natural that I do the same.

For me, no Christmas is complete without fudge.  Now, there are a lot of recipes out there, but I find this particular one to be the absolute best.  Unfortunately, I can’t say it’s my Gramma’s secret recipe – it’s actually Better Homes and Gardens’.

Simple Fudge:

1 1/2 cups of sugar

1 – 5 oz can of evaporated milk

1  stick of butter (don’t even try to use margarine)

2  cups of tiny marshmallows

1 cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips

1/2 cup of walnuts (chopped, chunks, whatever you like)

1/2 teaspoon vanilla

First, line a square baking dish with foil and butter it up.  Then, butter a sauce pan and then combine butter, sugar, evap. milk.  Cook it for about 10 minutes – the mixture should be boiling.  Reduce the heat down to medium and continue stirring for about another 6 minutes.  Then remove from the heat, add the marshmallows, then the chocolate, then vanilla.  Finally, add the nuts (always optional), and pour the mixture into your pan.  Let it sit for a couple hours in the fridge and then you have almost 2 pounds of delicious fudge to serve at your holiday celebration.

Demon 1Jessica asked me to share a personal story with you guys today, so I’ve decided to give you insight into the genesis of my novel, Protect Her. It’s a strange story, but when I was 18, I had an episode of sleep paralysis.

What happens during sleep paralysis is you wake while still being in REM sleep (the cycle of sleep when we dream). It’s thought that while in this part of sleep, our body is in a state of partial paralysis. Our bodies way of keeping us from acting out our dreams.

Whatever the reason, it’s terrifying. Your brain wakes up, while your body is still asleep. You can’t move or speak. Frequently, the episode is combined with hallucinations and shortness of breath.

Well, when this happened to me, I saw a demon hovering over me.

I’ve since learned that this is a common occurrence during sleep paralysis.Demon 2

Back before the internet was readily available to look up what malady you’ve suffered from, I had no idea what sleep paralysis was, let alone how common it is. For years, this demon has been in my head in Technicolor, so of course, when I decided to write my paranormal romance, Protect Her, I used this creature in my story. Perhaps all the myths of demons that pin people down while sleeping are just an episode of Sleep Paralysis…perhaps not.

I haven’t had another episode since, though I’ve seen my grandmother’s ghost at the edge of my bed. However, I wasn’t terrified and I wasn’t paralyzed. But that’s a whole other blog post, and possibly another book.

Excerpt:

The side door to the house opened behind her.

“Matka? Dzien dobry? Ma? Hello?”

The deep male voice filled the kitchen. Filled her. Her muscles tightened, her arms vibrated like she’d been doing yard work for the last hour and had just turned off the weed whacker.

Mary raised an eyebrow in her direction before looking past her to the door. “Kris, proszę meet Golden. Come, come.”

Heavy boots sounded on the wooden steps. The loud thumping stopped as if in mid-step and an invisible electric current slammed into her back. Heat spread through her and settled in her belly.

“Matka, what’s going on here?”

“Golden is your Babci’s new caregiver.” Mary enunciated as if she were speaking to a five-year-old. “I told you last week she answered the ad and was coming today. She’ll be starting on Monday.”

Mary glared at Kris and then turned to Golden with an apologetic smile on her face. Kris moved around the table and stood next to his mother.

Her mouth fell open.

He narrowed his piercing blue eyes at her, and a lock of sandy brown hair fell from behind his ear.

Holy shit.

He looked exactly like the man she’d been dreaming of for years.

The once cozy kitchen felt tiny. Airless. Too hot. Using the table as a lever, Golden forced herself to stand and shot a glance in Mary’s direction, worried she was hallucinating her dream man and looked delusional. It wouldn’t be the first time she’d acted crazy. Okay, Mary didn’t act like her new employee was tripping her ass off. Good to know.

Words in a language she didn’t understand flew out of his mouth, his unfriendly gaze fixed on her. Wow, angry much? He was obviously talking about her in a not so nice way, which pissed her off. Combined with her confusion, she was a hot mess. And all the while her emotions were ping ponging, her body pulsed, begging for this jerkoff to touch her.

His brows furrowed, and he ranted as though she weren’t in the room. Rude. New plan. She’d figure out how she’d dreamt of him later. First, she wanted to know what he had against her and why she reacted to the jerk like he’d brought her a dozen roses while hanging out the sunroof of a limo.

Mary cut him off with a single word. “Dosyć!” She closed her eyes and whispered, “Enough.”

Kris sucked in a breath, and without another word, pivoted on his heel and walked deeper into the house.

What was wrong with him? Ever hear of anger management classes? And what was wrong with her Benedict Arnold body? Pick an emotion and stick to it. Anger, that’s what was called for here. Not, gee you’re hot, I’ve been dreaming of you for years. Want to hook up?

Figures, the one guy that finally made her wake up and say hell yes was a total turd.
